Type of work – Prohibition of hazardous work

Minors

  • Children under 16 cannot work in any industrial undertaking. This includes working in a factory.

  • Children are restricted to undertaking ‘light’ duties. This is defined as work that is not harmful to their health and safety.

  • In order to employ a minor you must conduct a risk assessment that takes into account the particular dangers presented to minors in the work place, their relative inexperience and reduced risk awareness.

Young workers

  • Young workers under the age of 18 are NOT permitted to work with hazardous substances and dangerous machines, and you must take particular account of the workers’ inexperience due to their age.

  • In order to employ a young person you must do a risk assessment that takes into account the particular dangers presented to young people in the work place, and their relative inexperience and reduced risk awareness.
